John Lewis Partnership plans move into private housing and product rentals

A move into providing private rented housing is one of four areas of business expansion being considered by John Lewis Partnership as the business pivots for a society in which a far greater proportion of retail is expected to take place online.

Dame Sharon White, who took over as chairman in March, just before the government lockdown forced the closure of all John Lewis & Partners department stores, wrote to staff this morning (Thursday). It outlined five strategic steps to allow it to flourish under circumstances that were already challenging for retailers, before the coronavirus pandemic brought a new existential threat on to the scene.

One of the five is “expanding into more services”. After White requested ideas from employees on how to help the business thrive, it has selected four areas for further development: financial service, horticulture, private rented housing and rental/resale/recycle. While the first two would expand on products already offered by the business, the latter two appear to be fairly radical steps in rethinking the role the company can play in the economy.
